MUMMY MOVIES. The Curse Of The Pharaohs.
Not as many mummy movies were made unlike some of the other sub-genre's of horror movies but there was great horror graphics of the mummy art. With the discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922, there was a new found desire for Egyptian culture and history (known as Egyptomania). Movies were happy to provide you with these films of an ancient and exotic culture. Mummy’s were the preservation of the dead for immortality by being wrapped in gauze bandages and entombed in the mausoleums and the dead. When disturbed, they would awaken as slow moving, foot dragging monster to seek revenge on those who desecrated the tombs. Times have certainly changed.
EARLY UNIVERSAL YEARS The first real foray into this movie type was in 1932 with The Mummy starring the legendary Boris Karloff. They did appear in some silent films but this movie was the last of the the big three (Dracula and Frankenstein being the other two) to introduce the horror genre. More early movies.
UNDISTURBED UNTIL 1955It took one of the cinema's best comedy teams to bring the mummy movies back to life. This was the last monster that Abbott and Costello met with. Other movies from the 1950s.
THE MUMMY HAMMER STYLE 1960's and 1970'sWith low budgets but high production values, the Hammer Film Studios revived this creature after successful efforts with Horror of Dracula and the Curse of Frankenstein.
Other movies from the 1960s and 1970s.
DAWN OF THE NEW MUMMYSome of the films that were released in the 1980's. Other mummy movies from the 1980s.
